Joint statement by Canterbury Interfaith Society and Lady Khadija Trust Condemning Actions That Divide Communities and Undermine Shared Humanity
We stand in deep concern and sorrow over recent events—both locally and globally—that aim to sow division, mistrust, and fear among communities of different faiths, ethnicities, and cultures. We unequivocally condemn any act—whether verbal, physical, political, or symbolic—that seeks to dehumanise others. At a time when the world faces immense challenges, we must choose connection over conflict and compassion over division. As members of different faith traditions, we come together in the spirit of unity. While our beliefs may differ, our values often converge: care for the vulnerable, respect for human dignity, justice, peace, and the sanctity of life. Our faiths teach us that we are more alike than we are different. We all seek safety for our families, dignity in our work, and belonging in our communities. We all grieve the same, love deeply, and hope for better futures for our children. This is our shared humanity — and it must never be forgotten. We urge leaders, media, and members of the public to resist rhetoric and actions that feed fear and division. Instead, we call on all people of goodwill to stand united, speak out against hate, and work together to create spaces of belonging and mutual respect. Let this be a time where our differences become our strength, and where we build bridges that outlast the walls that others attempt to raise.
